Let’s Talk About What’s New at SkillBuilder®!

Dear SkillBuilder community,

As we step into spring, we’re excited to share the latest developments and insights from the SkillBuilder Team. Our commitment to providing innovative learning solutions remains steadfast, and we have some thrilling updates to enhance your experience.

Over the first part of 2025, we’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing customers on identifying what learning looks like in their workplaces and then designing and developing effective programs to skill up their employees. As part of these initiatives, we’re taking a look at what the future holds and what skillsets are required in these industries over the next 5-10 years.

The big questions on everyone’s mind are how is AI changing our industry? and how are we leveraging AI in the learning and development space?. Artificial Intelligence is no longer just a buzzword—it’s actively reshaping how we train, teach, and grow. From personalized learning paths to real-time coaching, AI is helping organizations deliver smarter, more adaptive training experiences. At SkillBuilder®, we’re exploring how AI can enhance everything from content development to learner engagement—think dynamic simulations, automated feedback, and tailored learning journeys. The result? Faster, more effective, and more scalable learning for everyone.

On a personal note, I want to take a moment to congratulate our team who manages the Alberta Level One Online Orientation Program for child care workers; over 33,000 learners across the province are currently registered in the program! We’ve got some exciting opportunities coming over the next few months around some additional online professional development opportunities in the early childhood education space.

If you have any feedback or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out. As always, your input, as well as your trust in us, helps us to better understand, meet and exceed your expectations.

Best,

Sarah Flesher, Ph.D.

Learning Resource Development – What’s New

Focus On… Accessibility

Our SkillBuilder Team of instructional designers, eLearning developers and multimedia experts is dedicated to ensuring our products are fully accessible to all learners, regardless of their unique needs. Our courseware meets or exceeds Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1), which focus on perceivability, operability, understandability, and robustness for all types of learners by:

  • Using screen reader-friendly formats, for example ensuring that all text, images, and media are readable by screen readers using semantic HTML (headings lists, and tables), proper label tags and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) labels are used
  • Ensuring all screen navigation can be completed using a keyboard only
  • Ensuring all audio and video content has closed captions and/or full-text transcripts
  • Testing out colour contrast options to ensure text and background colours are readable, especially for learners with low vision or colour blindness

A custom-built focus order is used to ensure the learner can navigate their way through each screen easily using just their keyboard.

Course screen sample

Selected areas are highlighted in a high contrast colour so learners can easily navigate through each screen, and all relevant images have alt text descriptions.

We also ensure that all graphics, backgrounds, and text have a high enough contrast to comply with WCAG standards.

At Base Corp., accessibility isn’t just a box to check—it’s a human right, and everyone deserves equal access to knowledge.

🔥Hot Tip!🔥

Before picking your learning tech, make sure you really understand your program’s needs and processes.

Your technology should fit your strategy—not the other way around.

When you know your goals, learners, and workflows, you can choose tools that actually work for you, not against you.

Start with clarity, then invest with confidence.
